About Dr Roy Hopkins

Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric & General Surgeon

Dr Hopkins is an Australian trained Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric and General Surgeon. He has accredited subspecialist training in Oesophagogastric and Bariatric Surgery. He performs all aspects of Upper GI surgery including surgery for stomach and oesophageal cancers, antireflux surgery, weight loss surgery and general surgery including gall bladder and hernia surgery. He is an approachable and compassionate person, who puts the quality of life of his patients at the forefront of his treatments. He believes in evidence based practice and working closely with the multidisciplinary team to achieve the best possible outcome for all patients.

Roy grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand. He originally studied genetics and biochemistry gaining a B.Sc with First Class Honours from Canterbury University and then a Masters of Science by Thesis from Otago University. Following this, he relocated to Sydney to study Medicine and graduated in 2007 with MBBS Honours. He obtained his Fellowship in General Surgery in 2016, through the Royal Prince Alfred and NSW central training network.

In 2017, Roy was accepted onto the highly competitive Australian and New Zealand Gastro-Oesophageal Surgery Association (ANZGOSA) post Fellowship program. He trained at Liverpool and Bankstown Hospitals in Sydney and then at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide. He was awarded the ANZGOSA Travelling Scholarship in 2018, which allowed him to present his research at the 2018 International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus Congress in Vienna, Austria.

In subsequent years, he undertook roles at Royal North Shore Hospital as well as relocating to the UK. In the UK, he worked at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and then with the Greater Manchester Oesophago-gastric Service at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester. This is the biggest cancer, bariatric and complex case Upper GI Centre in the UK.

Roy has a passion for education and teaching, as shown through his current public appointment as Surgical Superintendent and Staff Specialist at St George Public Hospital, where he oversees the training of junior surgical trainees within the Southern Surgical Skills Training Network, while also completing his on-call commitments. Roy is continually active in keeping up to date with the latest research through being an active member of various professional societies, as well as publishing research, having recently published research in the field of anti-reflux surgery in the prestigious British Journal of Surgery.

Outside of the operating theatre, Roy is a proud husband and father. He is also a keen bagpipe player and avid soccer and rugby fan.
